| BURKINA FASO YEELEN BA
Yeelen Ba, which means “big light” in the local language (Dioula) in Burkina Faso, is the name for the new company SSD-NYK s.a. (Société de Services Décentralisés Nuon-Yeelen Kura s.a.) in Burkina Faso.
Yeelen Ba works in the Kénédougou province, which borders the action area of Yeelen Kura in Mali. It will provide 3.000 households an small businesses with energy services in the province by 2012.
The SSD-NYK s.a. was created on the 12th May 2008, date of its registration to the Chamber of Commerce in Burkina Faso. The First clients were connected on the 28th of July 2009.
The board of members of Yeelen Ba consists of Annemarie Goedmakers (president of FRES), Amadou Diallo (Yeelen Kura) and Roland van der Pouw. Salimata Sanon is the general manager.
The head office of Yeelen Ba is located in Orodara, capital of Kénédougou province. It will follow the business model already applied successfully by Yeelen Kura in Mali and NuRa in South Africa.
The choice of Burkina Faso follows logically from the operations of Yeelen Kura in Mali. Yeelen Kura, located in Koutiala, is a successful company providing solar-based electricity to 24,000 people living in rural areas.
The living conditions in both areas are similar and the people in the target area in Burkina Faso expressed on several occasions their wish to have access to similar energy service as their neighbours in Mali. Kénédougou has 238.264 inhabitants and 35.560 households. More than 98% of the households in Kénédougou has no access to electricity and depend on kerosene lamps for lighting (87,54% of all households), oil lamps (6,64% of all households) or other sources like candles, torches, etc.
FRES has received a grant from the European Commission ACP/EU Energy facility to start a company in Burkina Faso.
And Yeelen Ba receives support from two local project partners : ATESTA and Vive le Paysan.
ATESTA has experience in solar technologies and will propose its services and advices to the new staff hired, in collaboration with Yeelen Kura.
Vive le Paysan has experience in educational and awareness workshops and will help to organize the marketing and sales campaigns.
Within the next four years (2008-2012), Yeelen Ba will open 8 energy local stores, hire and train the staff for the headquarters and for the energy stores, organize marketing and sales campaigns.
