| MALI SSD FRES
Number of customers of SSD FRES in December 2008: 255.
On October 6 2008, the first solar plant of Mali was opened in Kimparana. With this solar plant, 500 households and small scale companies will be able to have access to clean and affordable energy. On 30 March 2007 FRES (80%) and Yeelen Kura (20%) set up this company under the name of SSD FRES. The solar plant in Kimparana is the first one in Mali and the largest in West Afrika.
Preparations for construction started in 2007. The necessary permits were granted and the network was installed. The solar panels and technical support were supplied by Ubbink Solar and Tss4U, and the equipment was shipped in the autumn of 2007. The construction started in January 2008 and in May the solar plant was supplying electricity to its customers. This solar power plant replaces a diesel power plant. In October 2008, the official opening took place where delegates of the public authorities, Dutch ambassadors from Mali and Burkina Faso, Doede Vierstra, CFO of Nuon, and representatives of the International Business and Cooperation Agency (EVD) and Ubbink Solar were present.
The initial costs of a solar plant are higher than those of a plant which uses a diesel generator, therefore, a subsidy from PSOM (60% of the project budget) was required. To establish the new company, funding was received from the European Commission (ACP/EU Energy Facility programme) and N.V. Nuon.
In 2008, the board of SSD FRES was formed by Annemarie Goedmakers (FRES), Amadou Diallo (Yeelen Kura) and Roland van der Pouw (Nuon). Daily management is done by the management of Yeelen Kura.
