BUSINESS MODEL
FRES strives to fulfil the basic electricity needs of one million people in rural areas of developing countries by 2015. To accomplish this, FRES will establish a number of new, commercial electricity companies in developing countries, over the next few years.

FRES will concentrate on countries that are prepared to agree in advance about the position of the company to be set up (including possible tax benefits and subsidies). Through an adoption/sponsoring concept and with the help of customers of electricity companies in the Netherlands or elsewhere, FRES will try to keep the price of the energy services at an acceptable level. Investors are being sought for the proposed new companies. Additionally, subsidies will be needed to enable new companies to start up and sustain themselves.

Based on, among other things, the experiences in Mali and South Africa, Rob Costermans, FRES adviser and former bank director, has developed a FRES standard formula, which is able to roll out rapidly. For more information about this standard formula, pleae contact info@fres.nl.

This activity is made possible with financial support from HIVOS.
