CENTROSOLAR AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT

CENTROSOLAR AG, Munich, is the fifth-largest stock exchange listed solar company in Germany, based on its market capitalisation of around EUR 150 million. As a systems integrator, the company produces plug-and-play photovoltaic systems for private houses and industrial properties. CENTROSOLAR not only offers standard grid-connected systems, but is also leader in non-grid-connected solar power generators. Moreover, the company is a first mover in building integration, offering e.g. roof covers with integrated thin film solar cells. Having an extensive network of wholesale partners across the EU, CENTROSOLAR focuses on the supply to the large number of traditional sanitary and electrical installers who are increasingly discovering solar as their new business. CENTROSOLAR has secured its supplies of solar cells, the raw material that is currently in short supply, via various supply agreements.

Electricité de France

Together with Electricité de France (EDF), Nuon has founded the joint venture Yeelen Kura in Mali. EDF has more than 30 million customers on the French market. In 2001 EDF launched the ACCESS programme (access to electricity and services), which focuses on meeting the demand for electricity among the rural population in developing countries. ACCESS develops (profitable) rural electrification projects in rural villages without an electricity grid. These projects lead to the foundation of decentralised companies that are able to provide energy services to the local population. See the official website of EDF for more information about the company and the ACCESS programme.

NUON

Nuon’s strategy is to achieve profitable growth as an integrated electricity company in the fully liberalised energy market of northwest Europe. The guiding principle of Nuon is to respect both man and the environment. The company sees as its social responsibility to make available the knowledge, expertise and resources for energy supplies and combating poverty. Decentralised, sustainable energy sources, such as solar panels, represent a clean energy supply for inhabitants of rural areas that are otherwise too thinly populated for the establishment of a power grid. Nuon considers it important that the solutions be permanent, so that users can continue with their lives, independent of outside help.

Nuon has been active in the domain of rural electrification in developing countries since 1998. In 2000, Nuon established the electricity companies Yeelen Kura in Mali and NuRa in South Africa, in collaboration with, respectively, Electricité de France and Rural Area Power Solutions.

In the last five years, Nuon has collaborated with Oxfam/Novib in the field of rural electrification. In December 2004, the two parties started a project that involves the conversion of cargo containers into housing for small-scale companies. In the end of 2006, a total of six such units will be placed. Each container can house five small offices or stores. People who start their own company for the first time will receive training in entrepreneurship. After the containers are converted, they will be placed and equipped with solar panels. The local community is closely involved in the design and execution of this project.
